Interpreting in mental health can bring challenges not faced in medical interpretation. This workshop focuses on providing interpreters with the basics to be successful in a mental health encounter, such as what to expect and how to use different interpreting techniques to manage a mixed-language encounter. This language-neutral workshop is designed for experienced healthcare foreign language interpreters who may or may not have experience interpreting in the mental health setting. Legal interpreters are also welcome to attend.
Learning Objectives:
Name different professionals who work in mental health and the goals of the mental health interview/intake
Define the importance of impartiality in the mental health encounter
Practice using equivalents for commonly asked questions through role plays
Practice using whispered simultaneous for a mixed-language encounter
This workshop is approved for CEUs through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters' Continuing Education Approval Program (CEAP). Each participant receives a certificate of attendance.
